Designing Schools That Transform Young Lives: Paul Robinson Partnership’s Approach to Education Spaces

At Paul Robinson Partnership, we understand a thoughtfully designed school can do more than simply provide a space for learning—it can inspire creativity, promote well-being, and create safe environments where young people can thrive. From Specialist Resource Bases (SRBs) to inclusive mainstream schools and heritage upgrades, our team specialises in designing schools that empower students and educators alike.

Through projects like SRBs for Norfolk County Council, specialised Aurora Group schools, and functional updates at Hartismere and Somerleyton, we’re committed to creating spaces that foster learning, safety, and inclusivity for all.

How School Design Impacts Young People

Schools are more than bricks and mortar—they’re environments where futures are shaped. At Paul Robinson Partnership, we design school spaces that:

Promote Calmness: Using natural light, soft colours, and open layouts to reduce stress and foster focus.

Enhance Safety: Incorporating secure entrances, clear wayfinding, and durable materials for peace of mind.

Support Learning: Flexible classrooms and sensory spaces accommodate different learning needs and styles.

Foster Inclusivity: Designing environments that cater to students of all abilities, including those in Specialist Resource Bases (SRBs).

From Norfolk to Suffolk and beyond, our school designs ensure every child has the opportunity to grow, thrive, and succeed.

Specialist Resource Bases (SRBs): Munnings School Projects

One of our most impactful projects involves three Specialist Resource Bases (SRBs) commissioned by Norfolk County Council and delivered with Munnings Construction. These government-funded projects address a pressing need for additional support for children with special educational needs in Norfolk.

Before these developments, many children lacked access to essential resources. The SRBs are designed to bridge this gap, providing calm, nurturing spaces for individualised learning.

Our team—James Watkins, Robert Burr, Craig Liversidge, and Kori Moore—has delivered innovative and inclusive features across all three sites, including:

Sensory Rooms: Designed to support emotional regulation and relaxation.

Flexible Learning Areas: Adaptable spaces to meet the diverse needs of students and staff.

Breakout Spaces: Quiet areas for one-on-one support or individual reflection.

These projects showcase how thoughtful architectural design can empower educators and students alike while contributing to the broader community.

Aurora Group Schools: Eccles and Meldreth

Expanding our portfolio of inclusive school design, PRP worked with the Aurora Group to create specialised environments for students with complex needs. Inclusivity, sustainability, and safety for staff and students were at the heart of these designs.

At Eccles School, the proposed classroom block features:

Natural Lighting and Ventilation: High-level north-facing windows and sun tubes diffuse warm natural light while promoting air circulation.

Sustainable Roofing: A sloped Kingspan solar metal roof ensures efficient rainwater management and reduces maintenance.

Seasonal Comfort: Features like horizontal blinds and tree shading optimise comfort year-round.

At Meldreth School, we’ve designed flexible, therapeutic spaces tailored to students’ individual needs, creating environments that are both supportive and inspiring.

These projects demonstrate how carefully planned designs can transform schools into safe, sustainable, and empowering spaces.

Hartismere and Somerleyton School Developments

Our work at Hartismere School focused on modernising bathroom and washroom facilities to improve functionality and accessibility. Led by Mark Austin, the project includes a flat roof infill that not only upgrades essential facilities, but addresses the needs of all students and staff, regardless of mobility.

At Somerleyton School, a Grade II listed building, we’re in the early stages of designing a sensitive upgrade to the school’s facilities. While details remain under development, the aim is to enhance accessibility and safety, whilst also respecting the building’s historic character.

These projects reflect our ability to balance heritage preservation with innovative solutions, creating dynamic educational spaces that are both inclusive and functional.

Our Commitment to Schools and SRBs

At Paul Robinson Partnership, we are proud to be at the forefront of school and SRB design across Norfolk, Suffolk, and the UK. Whether it’s a Specialist Resource Base, a mainstream school, or a heritage upgrade, our designs reflect:

User-Centred Design: Listening to the needs of students, teachers, and parents to create bespoke solutions.

Sustainability: Incorporating eco-friendly materials and energy-efficient technologies into every project.

Inclusivity: Ensuring spaces are accessible, functional, and welcoming for students of all abilities.
